Coffee Growing – Dirty Jobs

Written by Amber on January 24, 2011 – 11:29 am -

Last night found me sick and laying listlessly on the couch browsing through Netflix. I decided to go with Dirty Jobs which, as it turned out, was a good decision because it reminded me that there are worse things in this world than migraine headaches. I could have a job scraping pigeon poo off rooftops, or I could be an ostrich farmer.

Though I’ve seen it before, I really quite enjoyed watching the following segment on coffee farming at Mountain Thunder. I’d forgotten how many coffee beans it takes just to make a pound of coffee!! Let that serve as a reminder that no coffee shall go unconsumed. Down with coffee wasting!

It’s Bean A While…

Written by Amber on November 16, 2009 – 8:48 am -

I mentioned before that I can’t find whole coffee beans at our local stores. Over the weekend I drove 30 minutes to the next town for a Wal-Mart run and while I was over there I checked out their HEB grocery store. Since I did accidentally order ground coffee instead of whole beans on my Gevalia order, I thought I would check out their coffee selection while I was there.

Whole beans!

Need I say more?

However, I still goofed a little, with the press of the Saturday shoppers on a payday weekend and three children in tow who get restless if I pause to peruse a label for too long, I inadvertantly bought decaf beans. *rolls eyes* The decaf label is tiny and I overlooked it at first glance. Oh, well, I suppose it doesn’t hurt to have a decaf option. Now I can justify having coffee in the evening, right? 😉

I can’t tell you how good it smelled when I opened the bag. Like the chef in Ratatouille who is taken back to a moment from his childhood with a single bite of the ratatouille, the smell of the beans was delicious, so familiar, like a long lost friend. If you’ve never bought whole bean coffee, it smells different before it’s ground. It really does!

And now my coffee pot is done brewing, the wonderful aroma fills the house. Time to sit & enjoy a cup. MMmmm… the end really does justify the beans!

In the Pursuit of Beans

Written by Amber on October 16, 2009 – 12:36 pm -

I’m disappointed. Our local grocery stores in our small town do not carry whole bean coffee. Not any. Not even one. I ended up settling for Folgers French Roast. It was either Folgers, Maxwell House, store brand or Dunkin’ Donuts. It’ll do… as I said, I’m a coffee junkie not a coffee snob.

I remember back “then.” Back when I was a teenager and all my dad bought was whole beans and we ground it ourselves for each pot. I remember back in the early days of our marriage when I didn’t think about the costs of whole beans versus ground or this brand against that brand.

I believe my dad bought his beans, or at least the Kona, from a store at the mall. I’m not driving an hour for coffee beans. The last time I bought whole beans I believe I got them at Wal-Mart. Perhaps I will check there the next time I make it to Wal-mart. Whenever that will be.

Or perhaps I will go ahead and buy some online from Gevalia?…Online ordering is, after all, my favorite way to shop. =)
